Pieternel Boogaard is the Director Agribusiness, Food and Water of FMO-Dutch Development Bank. Mrs. Boogaard started with FMO in September 2018 as Director Agribusiness, Food and Water. Agriculture is one of FMOs focus sectors and the current portfolio is more than EUR1bn. The department aim is to finance companies across the entire value chain in developing countries from input providers to food companies, from cash crops to permanent crops, livestock, trade and logistics.
After getting her Master’s degree in Dutch Law, Pieternel Boogaard began her banking career as a trainee with KBC. In 1997, she moved to ING to pursue a long and international career in commercial banking for one of the largest financial institutions in Europe. In ING she fulfilled different roles in structured finance and in different sectors: originating, negotiating, structuring and executing lending transactions. As of 2005 she decided to focus more on the agricultural sector and became manager of the Soft Commodities Desk in ING’s international trade finance. During that time, she saw more opportunities to support producing companies and decided to set up and develop agricultural finance for producers in emerging markets, especially in Central & Eastern Europe for which she spent 6 months in Kiev. Following that, she became Managing Director of the agri team for Central & Eastern Europe and was based in Moscow from 2011 until 2015. Upon return to the Netherlands, her role and responsibilities expanded, and she became the Managing Director for ING’s Food & Agri team for Europe.
